What type of Window Treatments Help With Privacy the Most?

April 30, 2018

Your home is your sanctuary, and if you think like most homeowners, finding Washington DC window treatments that give you privacy and sound control to maintain your sanctuary is important to you. Any window covering is preferable to a naked window. However there are some window treatments that give you more privacy than others, especially on specialty windows.

Improving Privacy on Hard to Cover Windows

Most large, square windows in your house are a snap to cover with nearly any window treatment including Washington DC shutters, drapes, or blinds|.

But there might be some situations when you need a particular type of window treatment to achieve the level of privacy you need. These include:

  • Windows in the bathroom where water and humidity might ruin fabric window treatments.

  • Entryway sidelights that are tall and skinny on which window treatments can be pushed around when you use the door.

  • Specialty-shape windows like eyebrows, round windows, bay windows, etc., where typical store-bought blinds and shades can’t cover your window without sacrificing the beauty of the window’s unique shape.

  • Big windows that can be difficult to reach like second-story foyer windows.

In these cases, you’ll want window treatments that go the distance to provide privacy to your home.

As a bonus, look for window treatments that can block sound to keep random noise outside and keep inside noise inside.

The Best Window Treatments for Privacy

The window treatments we recommend most for privacy are Polywood® plantation shutters. Plantation shutters are able to be shut completely, for when blocking all the light and sound you can is what you want. When you want to let light in and see outside, just tilt the louvers. For high windows, you can always position the louvers at an angle so light can enter but passersby can’t see in.

Interior shutters are also perfect for specialty-shaped windows because they’re custom built to your exact dimensions. And since Polywood shutters are moisture resistant, they’re an excellent choice for bathrooms.

Another great window treatment for privacy is roller shades. Roller shades take up minimal space at the top of the window, but are easy to pull down to prevent any views from outside your home. Though they can’t be custom-fit to fit unique window shapes, you can find roller shapes made from water resistant material for areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.

Window Treatments that Don’t Help With Privacy

While any window covering adds a minimum amount of privacy, there are a few that might not get the job done. The first is sheer curtains. Sheer curtains used to be popular a while back and can add an airy feeling to a room. Yet they don’t offer the level of privacy of other window treatments, particularly at night.

Another window treatment that isn’t great for privacy are cheap or bulky blinds, which can break or get stuck at a certain angle. If you can’t completely close the blinds because of breakage, then they’re not helping keeping your home private.
