New Year, New Window Styles and Washington DC Design Trends

January 11, 2017

This time of year is an ideal time to update your interior fashion and window treatments with the hottest styles of 2017. Whether it’s painting your living room, buying new window coverings or changing out furniture, we have the scoop on what’s in vogue in 2017 for interior design and window treatment trends in Washington DC.

Duskier Colors & Pastels

Both pastels and duskier hues are growing in popularity while clear, vibrant colors are on the wane. Shades of gray, blue and green are very popular in addition to dusty hues of pink, blue, and yellow. Many hues on the palette are evocative of nature from sky blue to Pantone’s color of the year, “Greenery.”. Neutral colors are still found in the color spectrum with whites, grays and darker beiges giving balance to other shades.

Painting most of your walls in a neutral color and then adding in flashes of color with feature walls, accessories, and small furnishings may be one of the easiest things you can do to update the color in your home. Then it’s easy to highlight the latest colors in your home now and change the little things out when color trends adapt after some time. When thinking about new window coverings, pick ones in neutral colors such as Polywood® plantation shutters in white or a natural wood color stain. These will easily complement any style or color palette and can stay in place if you swap room colors in the future.

Natural Textures

Natural textures will remain popular in 2017. Fibers that are popular include weaved material in rugs or baskets, natural or reclaimed wood, and twine. You’ll see these textures popping up in new places like on headboards, furniture, and art work. You can easily incorporate what you already own and add texture to it such as wrapping a frame in twine or making an interest piece from old wood.

Adding textures to your home through window treatments add another degree of interest to your décor. Reclaimed wood shutters are constructed from aged, weathered wood that was once part of doors or buildings. The wood has unique twists and knots that bring an organic quality to your home. Other window treatments that bring texture into your home include Ovation® wood shutters or shades made of natural woven material.

Metals

Home designs that incorporate multiple metals are becoming popular across Washington DC. Nickel, wrought iron, and gold are especially stylish in 2017. You can add metals to your décor by adding industrial, homespun, or vintage pieces such as bar stools, benches, or light fixtures that are built from metals. Also, don’t shy away from using nickel or pewter in your faucets or hardware for a more modern aesthetic.

Barn door shutters and sliding barn doors are a charming way to bring in some metals and add a streamlined or homespun style to your home. Barn doors are constructed from solid wood and are available in a wide array of hardware such as rollers, sliding tracks, and door handles that are made of different metals.
